The Bute Inlet Hydroelectric Project consists of 17 proposed run of river facilities at the headwaters of Bute Inlet, located 150-200 km north of Powell River, British Columbia. Combined, these facilities have a potential capacity of 1,027 megawatts with potential energy generation of 2,905 GWh per year. Once built, the project could produce enough energy to meet the electricity needs of 300,000 homes, with the ability to displace over 2 million tonnes of greenhouse gases annually. It is estimated to take over 3,000 person years of employment for construction of the Bute Inlet Hydroelectric Project.
Our Role in the Project
EDI was the aquatic baseline and environmental impact assessment consultant. Our role included:
- Design and implementation of studies pertaining to fish distribution, life history and aquatic ecology.
- Environmental protection planning.
- Implementation of radio telemetry study for resident char.
- Use of DNA to describe population structure for various fish species.
