Murray River Project

In summer 2024, HD Mining International Ltd. initiated construction and underground development of the Murray River Project, a coal mine located southwest of Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, within the Peace River Coalfield. This project has undergone a rigorous regulatory process, securing comprehensive provincial and federal approvals, including permits under the Mines Act and Environmental Management Act, and adhering to conditions from the BC Environmental Assessment Office and Impact Assessment Agency of Canada.

Since 2010, EDI Environmental Dynamics Inc. has provided extensive environmental management and monitoring services for the Murray River Project. This long-term partnership encompasses initial baseline studies, ongoing water quality and hydrology monitoring, air quality, wildlife, fisheries and aquatics, and invasive plant programs.

As the Murray River Project moved into construction, EDI’s role included oversight of environmental management during the construction phase. EDI’s current support involves helping to maintain regulatory compliance, developing and implementing environmental management plans, and full-time environmental monitoring.

A key innovation contributing to the project’s success has been the creation of a comprehensive compliance and consultation database. This database is instrumental in tracking project commitments, managing timelines and confirming environmental compliance. The consultation database leverages automation to efficiently log engagement activities with First Nations and regulatory agencies, streamlining communication and record-keeping.
