Three EDI team members are celebrating milestone anniversaries in May 2025: 15 years for Bryan Gustafson (Environmental Technician, Nanaimo), 20 years for Matt Power (Senior Technologist, Whitehorse), and a whopping 30 years for Bob Redden (Senior Advisor, former CEO, Prince George). What has made these team members decide to stick around for the long haul at EDI?
Bryan, Matt and Bob all agree that work at EDI involves constantly learning different things and exploring new locations. “No two workdays are alike,” states Bryan. Matt agrees and explains “Everyday I learn something new…. Everyday….This makes the job engaging because of the continuous variety of work.”
Another thing they all agree on is the incredible people they work with. Matt states, “My colleagues across all EDI regions are smart, empowered, thoughtful, friendly, and darn good at what they do. We work great as a cohesive team, are passionate about what we do, and love to share experiences together, on both professional and personal levels.” Bryan supports this, identifying that his supervisors and colleagues have become long-time friends from whom he has received consistent support.
The strength of the EDI team is no accident, being influenced by Bob’s leadership over the years and one of his passions, which is getting to know and understand people and, in doing so, building solid relationships and teams. Bob states, “As soon as I started at EDI, I felt the trust and respect Dwight Hickey [EDI’s founder] gave to me, even though I was quite young. I did not have that experience at other places I’d worked before joining EDI. I’ve worked with many different people during my time at EDI, and the long-term relationships I’ve experienced here and in the communities and industries I have worked mean a lot to me.”
The diversity of experience over the years for these three EDI “long-timers” is exemplified in their career highlights. For Bob, these highlights include: 1) working in a collaborative environment to generate about 30,000 hours of work and training time for local First Nation members via Lhai Ventures on the Coastal GasLink project; and 2) conducting fisheries work in northwest BC on the Nass River and tributaries in the late 1990s with Pat Tobler (EDI’s Territories Regional Director) and Rob Van Schubert (EDI’s former VP and Senior Fisheries Biologist). Matt highlights honing his GIS skills working on the Baffinland Iron Mines project for over a decade. The Dempster Fibre Line project is also special to Matt because of the people he worked with from ROHL and the lasting relationships that came from the experience. A career highlight for Bryan was being able to join in the Employee Share Ownership Program (ESOP) and profit sharing here at EDI, which has provided financial support over the years.
EDI is a special place to work and this has led to the long-term retention of many team members. To learn more about our team here at EDI, explore our website at edynamics.com.
