EDI is seeking a talented individual to provide highly valued expertise to advise on wildlife programs. This is a permanent, full-time opportunity for the position of Senior Wildlife Lead for our Prairies Region in our Calgary or Saskatoon office. Remote locations will be considered. As the Senior Wildlife Lead, you will provide regulatory and technical support to project managers and clients in support of various projects. You will mentor staff and participate in business development initiatives. You will have the opportunity to set the course for your career, including future business ownership opportunities. The successful candidate will be responsible for:

• Advising on/leading wildlife baseline field programs, including general wildlife and wildlife habitat surveys, as well as species-specific surveys within a variety of ecoregions
• Advising on/leading environmental assessments, regulatory approval processes, environmental monitoring, post-construction monitoring and other technical studies and undertaking senior/technical review of the associated project deliverables, as appropriate
• Managing or sponsoring the execution of multi-disciplinary projects, including study design, budgeting, data management and analysis, data quality assurance and control, technical reporting and client liaison, as appropriate
• Advising on/ sponsoring environmental protection and mitigation plans to facilitate regulatory approvals in concert with project teams and/or project managers
• Providing practical advice, guidance and effective solutions to clients regarding wildlife issues, regulatory requirements and best management practices
• Liaising with clients, Indigenous partners and jurisdictional governments to provide effective and responsible project advancement
• Working effectively in a team environment to meet project goals
• Acting as expert witness for wildlife during the Alberta Utilities Commission hearing process, as appropriate
• Providing guidance, training and direction to junior and intermediate wildlife biologists to support successful completion of projects and development of the Prairies wildlife team
• Contributing to advance the capacity of EDI’s Prairies region by supporting recruitment
• Helping to diversify and grow EDI’s business in the renewable energy and other sectors by identifying opportunities, developing and managing client relationships, and leading proposal writing
• Representing corporate values and EDI’s commitment to high quality services
• Participating proactively in EDI’s health and safety program

We are looking for someone with:

• Broad knowledge of terrestrial wildlife and related disciplines (e.g., vegetation, terrestrial ecosystems)
• In-depth expertise with one or more species at risk and/or species of regulatory concern (e.g., caribou, bats) in Alberta and Saskatchewan
• Extensive experience in wildlife inventory and habitat survey methods in Alberta and Saskatchewan
• Proven record of professional report writing and senior technical review
• Project coordination and client liaison experience
• Working knowledge of provincial (Alberta/Saskatchewan) and federal regulatory requirements and processes
• Strong interpersonal, organizational, analytical and time management skills
• Aptitude for working collaboratively and effectively with junior and senior staff of multiple disciplines, within teams on various projects of differing complexity, and with environmental sub-consultants and government agencies
• Ability to recognize and incorporate into analyses both scientific and Indigenous perspectives
• Interest in providing mentorship and junior staff support/supervision
• Capacity to conduct occasional field work in remote locations and/or travel between offices

Job requirements include:

• A minimum of 15 years of related experience
• A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in biology or related discipline(s)
• A professional designation recognized in Alberta (i.e., PBiol)
• Specialized expertise in wildlife biology
• Strong knowledge of jurisdictional environmental assessments and decision-making processes
• Demonstrated experience designing and leading wildlife programs/studies
• Demonstrated experience in project management, client liaison, and effective management of team members and sub-consultants
• Specialized expertise in the renewable energy, power generation and/or oil and gas sectors
• Class 5 driver’s licence
