About this opportunity:

This is a permanent, full-time opportunity for the position of Ecosystem Mapper and Terrestrial Ecologist. We are seeking candidates with a professional background in terrestrial ecology and practical skills in ArcGIS. If you are a creative person with strong technical skills in terrestrial ecology and mapping and GIS, who would like to work with and support an effective, established team, then this is the opportunity for you!

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

• Assisting with or leading the design, planning and implementation of ecosystem mapping programs including desktop planning and field programs
• Maintaining a working knowledge of regulatory and industry expectations for ecosystem mapping products in one or many jurisdictions across western Canada
• Coordinating with GIS professionals for ecosystem mapping set up and results presentations
• Collaboration with terrain and soils mapping professionals
• Conducting and leading field-based data collection
• Collaborating with the EDI team to execute proposals related to ecosystem mapping, including cost estimates
• Participating proactively in EDI’s health and safety program

We are looking for someone with:

• Proficiency with ArcPro; experience with Summit or other 3D software considered an asset
• Strong knowledge of the Ecosystem Mapping standards of at least one jurisdiction within western Canada (e.g., Terrestrial Ecosystem Mapping, Ecological and Landscape Classification)
• Photo interpretation experience
• A proven record of delivering professional mapping products
• Strong attention to detail and results oriented
• A proven record in completing field work productively and safely
• Strong organizational, time management and interpersonal skills
• The ability to work in a dynamic, team-oriented environment
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities
• Willingness to travel for field work in remote locations and/or between offices
• Experience and interest in mentoring staff and providing support/ supervision
• Self-motivation and an ability to respond in a fast-paced environment

Job requirements includes:

• A minimum of 5 years of related experience (or equivalent)
• BSc degree in biology or related discipline(s); MSc would be an asset
• Registration or eligibility for registration as RPF, RPBio, PBiol or PAg
• Knowledge and experience of terrestrial ecology in western Canada, such as soil science, vegetation ecology and taxonomy (including listed species), Terrestrial Ecosystem Mapping, wetland ecology, and/or reclamation
• GIS experience required; experience Ecosystem Mapping and 3D mapping with software such as Summit an asset
• Experience in a variety of sectors, including oil and gas, transportation, mining, renewable energy and/or urban development
• Class 5 driver’s licence
