North America’s northern-most Canada Goose Nest

August 18, 2015

On June 26, 2013, a Canada Goose (Branta canadensis) nest was observed by EDI's Anne MacLeod, along with Jukka Juntanen, on Baffin Island, Nunavut, Canada. The significance of the nest is that it's location lies approximately 1,200 km north of previously documented Canada Goose nesting sites in North America. Further studies of the nest involved compiling evidence to confirm the species; the team acquired egg measurements, DNA samples and photo-documentation. Once confirmed as a Canada Goose nest, an article was submitted to the Artic Institute of North America documenting the observation and results. The article titled "Nesting of Canada Geese on Baffin Island, Nunavut", was accepted and is available on the Arctic institute's website: http://arctic.journalhosting.ucalgary.ca/arctic/index.php/arctic/article/view/4502.
